Episode 201: The Keys to Happiness
This week, Eric Guy, Chief Victory Officer, is joined by Happiness Researcher and Educator, Jackson Kerchis. Jackson is an author, certified executive coach, and co-founder of Happiness Means Business. From being a former management consultant, Zen monk, college instructor, and one of the only people to major in happiness, Jackson brings his wisdom and insights to the conversation, as he and Eric speak about mindfulness, happiness, and leadership.
Takeaways:
1. Mindfulness and Mental Training – Jackson emphasizes how daily meditation and mindfulness practices significantly improve mental clarity and emotional control. Training the mind, much like physical exercise, leads to positive shifts in behavior and outlook.
2. Happiness as a Skill – Happiness is described by Jackson as a skill that can be cultivated through consistent practice of biological, psychological, and relational well-being. The focus is on nurturing the ingredients (exercise, positive emotions, and strong relationships) rather than pursuing happiness directly.
3. Lessons from Zen Practice – The experience of living as a Zen monk highlighted the importance of simplicity, presence, and “polishing the mirror” of awareness. It’s about refining attention to experience life vividly.
4. Leadership and Organizational Climate – Eric and Jackson touch on creating psychologically safe environments in organizations. Leaders are encouraged to foster trust, open communication, and emotional intelligence to boost team performance and morale.
5. Focus on Process Over Outcome – A recurring theme is embracing the journey rather than fixating on outcomes. Daily habits and intentional practices lead to sustained well-being and success.
